Ms. Walsh's Sixth Grade

                                              Social Studies

The sixth grade social studies curriculum is new this year and focuses on American history.   We begin the year by studying the background and conflicts that lead to the Civil War and also focus on the Reconstruction.  Industry, Immigration, and Westward Expansion are all topics in which we will study how the United States grew as a nation leading us to the time when our country became a world power.  We will discuss the decades of the twentieth century focusing on WWI and WWII,  along with the detriments and benefits each brought about.  Toward the end of the year our studies will lead us into discussions about our nation in slightly more recent times including the Cold War, Vietnam, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Throughout the year map, globe, and critical thinking skills will be utilized and practiced.

Notetaking is modeled this year in Social Studies.  Notes and the text are allowed in early testing, but as the year progresses notetaking will be the only help allowed during tests.  Near the end of the year neither is used in preparation for Regional.  We will review chapters as a class prior to the test, and I will be showing the class how to review and study for tests.

Projects and activities involving hands-on approaches will be assigned periodically, and a research paper and presentation is required as a wrap-up for this program.
