Sleep – Why it's Important Why do we need to sleep? Kids have busy days. First, there's school, taking care of pets, doing chores, after school activities, sports, playing with
friends and family, and homework. All of this is tiring. At the end of the day, your body needs a rest. It has to get ready for the next day. Sleep lets your body do just that! Not only is sleep
important for your body, but it helps your brain, too. Scientists aren't sure what exactly the brain does during sleep, but many believe that it sorts through and stores information, replaces natural chemicals in your brain,
and solves problems while you sleep. So, how much sleep do you get a night? Did you know that kids between the ages of 5 – 12 really need about 10 to 11 hours of sleep every night? Of course, not everyone
is the same. Some may need more and some may need a little less. Experts agree, though, that kids need a lot of sleep in order for their bodies to be rested and ready for another day. If you don't get
enough sleep, you may feel cranky or tired the next day. You might not be able to think clearly, or you may have an argument with a friend over something stupid. You might feel clumsy playing your favorite sport or
instrument, or plain just have a bad day. So, when your parents tell you it's time for bed, you might just want to listen to them. They know what you need! You'll feel better about it in the morning! |
