School Bus Safety (for kids and adults)

Did you know that more than 330,000 Connecticut kids ride school buses every day?  According to Safe Kids Connecticut, there are some very simple things you can do as kids to keep yourself safe while getting on and off the school bus.

  • Wait for the bus in a safe place, away from traffic and the street
  • Line up facing the bus door, not along the side of the school bus
  • Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you, before you get on the bus.
  • NEVER cross the street behind the school bus.
  • After getting off the bus, move out of the traffic area.
  • Wait for a signal from the bus driver before you cross the street.  Walk at least 10 steps away from the front of the bus so that the bus driver can see you.
  • Drivers have to follow certain rules around school buses, but not all of them do, so watch carefully when getting on and off the bus.

Things to do as adults:

  • Drive carefully on neighborhood streets and around school zones.  Always expect the unexpected!
  • When the lights are flashing on a school bus, come to a complete stop.
  • Red flashing lights indicate that the bus is stopped and students are getting on or off the bus.
  • Don't start driving until the red lights stop flashing.  Be aware that a child may dash across the street.
  • The fine in Connecticut for passing a stopped school bus is $450!
