Here are some suggestions and activities to do with your child at home.

Read with your child.  Talk about what you read. 

-Retell the story

-Look at and talk about the pictures

-Locate sight words

-Make note of rhyming words and words that begin with the same sound

-Predict what might happen next

-Talk about what their favorite part is

-Discuss and ask questions after a TV show, movie, etc.

Recognizing letters and letter sounds:

-Find letters at the grocery store, road signs, license plates, store signs

-Highlight letters in magazines

-Cut out letters in a newspaper

-Give your child a small list of items at the grocery store

Mathematics-Count Anything:

-Count anything at home such as silverware, flowers, stairs, people, cars, etc.

-Count groups of objects

-Discuss the numbers on a clock and start telling time by the hour

-Find numbers everywhere such as license plates, elevator buttons, magazines, house 

  numbers, road signs, price tags, etc.

-Count and sort items from the grocery store

Writing and fine motor skills:

-Practice writing his or her name and other family members

-Cut, glue, color and draw

-Use Legos or Playdough

-Dial the phone or switch the TV channel

Games:

-Play different games such as Candyland, Go Fish, Checkers, etc.

-Use Scrabble letters or magnetic letters to think of words that start with a specific letter

or spell words

-Play I Spy- "I Spy something"- use colors, starting with a specific letter, shapes

-Take turns rhyming words.  Example:  ball-tall, cat-hat, mouse-house, fan-pan

-Play the opposite game.  Example:  hot-cold, night-day, hot-cold

-Count some change and put it into a bank

Help your child memorize:

-His or her full name

-phone number including area code
