Language Arts:
Reading
The reading program will follow Reader's Workshop format this year. Students will select books of their interest and on
their reading level. Students will be encouraged to read a variety of genres. Mini-lessons will focus on putting the skills learned in earlier grades into practice. Vocabulary development, comprehension and inferential
thinking skills will be emphasized. The following areas are stressed:
Graphic Organizers
Theme
Character Development
Vocabulary Enrichment
Cause and Effect
Details, Fact and Opinion
Similes, Metaphors, Idiom, Alliteration
Critical Stance
Author's Purpose
Summarizing
Compare and Contrast
Main Idea and Supporting Details
Prediction
Drawing Conclusions
Setting, Plot, Climax, and Resolution
Writing:
The fifth grade will once again focus
on Writer's Workshop. Each student will write seed ideas in a writer's notebook. These seed ideas will be the basis to generate story development as the year progresses. We will continue to switch teachers about every 4-6 weeks.
Topics to be studied this year will include developing our notebooks, Feature Articles, Revision,Picture books, Poetry, Literary Analysis of a Novel, Expository writing and Writing Conventions.
Students will be held responsible for all Word Wall words- up through fourth grade in any and all writings. We will introduce a word wall of troublesome words in fifth grade.
