Colebrook Consolidated School

Language Arts in Mrs. Canfield's First Grade

                                   Reading:
Our reading program is literature based.  We are using the Scott Foresman series anthology selections for shared reading experiences.  These include big books  and individual copies for the students.  We also use the "Little Celebrations" books for individual practice.
We are also using the Sunshine series from the Wright Group for guided reading groups.
Each day we begin with 15 minutes (extended as the year progresses) of silent reading.
We suppliment our reading series with phonemic awareness games and Phonics

Spelling:

The students are given 5 new words each week to learn.  These words are practiced in different ways throughout the week.  At the end of each week, these words are added to the Word Wall. The students are required to spell these words correctly in all future writing.
The students learn many games to help them practice and retain the correct spelling of these words.  Letters are chanted as the new words are practiced. "Be A Mindreader" and "Guess the Hidden Word" are are few of their favorites games.
