It is important for all children to read each day. We all know this, but wonder how to find the time or how to help. Here are some general tips: Some of this reading time should be spent with you reading to your child. Even once your child is able to read on his own, you should still read aloud to your child.
Select books that will be interesting for your entire family. Read a classic. Read about a place you will visit. Read an article from the newspaper.
Read to yourself, for yourself. Your child needs to see you reading to know you value reading. Visit the library regularly. There are plenty of GREAT books out there—go get
them! Although you may choose to get your card from the Beardsley Memorial Library in Winsted or the Norfolk Public Library, keep in mind that your card is good at any public library.
Give books as gifts. A note inside the front cover makes the book even more special.
Some of the reading time should be spent with your child reading independently. The act of reading looks different at each level. For tips on how to help your child, click on the appropriate level.
Set aside some time each day for family reading. 20 minutes is a good amount of time.
Often, right after supper is the easiest time, but select an appropriate time for your
family.
