Welcome to Mrs. Pac's Reading Room

                         Proficient Reader

A proficient reader can read most things, including involved chapter books, the newspaper and most magazines.   You can still help your proficient reader.

Ask your child genuine questions about what he's reading in the same manner that you would ask a friend about a movie that you have not seen.  You might ask about the characters, the plot or the setting.

Read a book the same book as your child.  Plan your reading together and then set aside time to discuss the books.  Use this opportunity to discuss characters, values and your beliefs.

Help your child select books that are appropriate both in readability as well as maturity level.  This is often difficult with a proficient reader, but there are many young adult books available so your child will not have to advance to adult books.

Read the newspaper daily with your child.  Ask your child his opinion about current events.
