Welcome to Mrs. Pac's Reading Room
Beginning Readers Discuss all the pictures of new books and predict the story before beginning to read the book. Continue to read pattern books and nursery rhymes. Help your child figure out a word he doesn't know by asking questions like: Do you know a word that starts with that sound? Does that make sense? Read aloud to your child. Choose books that are just a little too hard for him to read
independently. Read it more than once. Monitor your child's book choice to ensure that the process of reading remains pleasurable and not frustrating. A child should not have to work at most words on each page—only a few.
Children generally begin to read in Kindergarten or First Grade. It is at
this time that they are beginning to make meaning from the words on the page. A beginning reader still reads slowly and often has to stop to figure out words.
You can help your beginning reader.
Have your child reread a familiar book many, many times.
Does the picture give us a clue?
